SMOK: The Brand Almost Everyone Has Owned
SMOK has been making vape hardware since 2010 and is one of the highest-volume manufacturers in the industry. Its tanks — particularly the TFV line — are widely regarded as some of the best flavor producers ever made, and the NOVO and Nord pod families have introduced more people to refillable vaping than almost any other product line.
Community opinion is genuinely split, and it's worth being straight about why.
SMOK's tanks and coils get consistent praise; the device electronics get consistent criticism. Recurring complaints center on leaking pods, coil variance from pack to pack, and buttons or displays failing after several months of use. Set against that, the coils are cheap, widely available, and produce excellent flavor when you get a good one.
The practical takeaway: buy coils in 5-packs so a dud is an inconvenience rather than a ruined week, and treat SMOK as a value brand rather than a buy-it-for-life one. Everything here ships from our US warehouse.

How to Turn On a SMOK Vape
This is the single most searched SMOK question, and the answer is the same across nearly the entire range:
press the fire button five times rapidly. The screen or LED wakes and the device is live. Five clicks also powers it off.
If nothing happens:
- Charge it. A flat battery won't respond to any button input. Give it 20 minutes on USB-C before concluding anything.
- Check the pod is seated. On pod devices, a partially inserted pod breaks the connection and some models won't wake at all.
- Clean the contacts. Wipe the gold pins on the pod base and inside the device bay with a dry cotton swab. E-liquid residue here is a common cause of a device that seems dead.
- Check for a lock. Some SMOK models lock the settings separately from the power state — see below.
Unlocking a SMOK
Most SMOK mods lock the wattage controls to prevent accidental changes in a pocket. To unlock,
press fire plus the up adjustment button simultaneously on most models, or fire plus down on others — the screen shows a padlock icon when locked. On simpler pod devices there's no lock function at all; five clicks handles everything.
Resetting a SMOK
SMOK devices don't have a dedicated factory reset. The reliable approach is to remove the battery (or let an internal-battery device drain fully), wait a minute, then reinsert and power on. This clears the puff counter and most software hangs. On menu-driven mods, three rapid clicks of fire opens the mode menu, where you can reset the wattage or switch modes.
How to Fill a SMOK Pod or Tank
- Locate the fill port. Most SMOK pods fill through a silicone-plugged port on the side or bottom. TFV-series tanks are top-fill — slide or twist the top cap.
- Fill along the wall, leaving a small air gap at the top. That pocket of air maintains the pressure balance that stops leaks. Never pour liquid down the center chimney — that's the airflow path and it leads straight to a flooded coil.
- Reseat the plug firmly. A partially seated plug is the most common cause of a leaking SMOK pod.
- Wait ten minutes before the first draw. The cotton needs time to fully saturate, and firing dry cotton burns it permanently in under a second.

Wattage and Coil Selection
Every SMOK coil has a wattage range printed on it. Start at the bottom of that range and work up in 5W steps until flavor peaks — below it, vapor is thin and flavor flat; above it, you scorch the cotton, and a scorched coil doesn't recover.
- 0.15Ω mesh (RPM 4) — roughly 60–80W. Sub-ohm, lung draws, 3mg or 6mg freebase.
- 0.4Ω and above — 20–35W. Tighter draws, and where nicotine salts belong.
Coils are strictly series-specific. RPM 4 coils don't fit a Nord device, and TFV18 coils don't fit anything else. Read the name printed on the coil before ordering.
Troubleshooting
Leaking — the most common SMOK complaint. Check the fill plug is fully seated, don't overfill, and avoid hard fast draws that flood the coil. Storing a pod device upright helps. Cabin pressure on flights is another cause — empty the pod before flying, and see
taking a vape on a plane.
Burnt taste — usually under-priming, chain vaping, or wattage above the coil's range. Give the wick 20–30 seconds between draws. See
why vapes taste burnt.
Gurgling or spitting — a flooded coil. Tap the device mouthpiece-down on a paper towel and take short gentle draws. See
why vapes pop and crackle.
New coil tastes burnt immediately — either it wasn't primed and soaked long enough, or it's a dud. SMOK coil variance is real; that's the argument for 5-packs.
SMOK FAQs
How do you turn on a SMOK vape?
Five rapid clicks of the fire button on virtually every model. The same sequence powers it off. If nothing happens, charge the device first — a dead battery won't respond to button input.
Is SMOK a good brand?
Mixed, and the split is predictable. The
tanks and coils have a strong reputation — TFV-series tanks in particular are still recommended years after release for flavor production. The
device electronics are where the criticism concentrates: leaking pods, coil duds within a pack, and hardware failing after a few months are all recurring themes in vaping communities. If you want maximum durability, GeekVape's Aegis line has the better reputation. If you want cheap, widely available coils and good flavor, SMOK earns its place — and buying coils in 5-packs makes the variance manageable.
Why do SMOK pods leak?
Usually a fill plug that isn't fully reseated, overfilling with no air gap, or drawing too hard. Some models are more prone to it than others by design. Storing the device upright and refilling before it runs low both help.
How long do SMOK coils last?
Five days to two weeks. Sweetened dessert and tobacco juices caramelize on the mesh and shorten life considerably; clean fruit and menthol run longest. Replace as soon as flavor drops.
Which SMOK coil do I need?
Match the series name printed on your existing coil, not just the brand. RPM 4, M Series, and TFV18 coils are all different and none are cross-compatible. If you're unsure, check the device manual or the old coil itself.
What wattage should I vape at?
Whatever range is printed on the coil, starting from the low end. A 0.15Ω mesh coil typically wants 60–80W; a 0.4Ω coil might want 23–30W. Going above the printed range is the fastest way to burn a new coil.
What juice should I use?
Nicotine salts at 25mg or 50mg in the NOVO 6 at low wattage.
Freebase at 3mg or 6mg in a TFV tank or the NOVO 6 run higher. Browse all
vape juice.
Do you sell SMOK tanks?
Not currently — we stock TFV18 coils but not the tank itself. See
vape tanks for what's available, including the Vaporesso iTANK T.
